Course Overview
Our commercial state-of-the-art, disability friendly, salon is a perfect place to learn everything from cutting, colouring and styling. You’ll start your learner journey right away, gaining the skills you need with hands-on experience in our Hair Salon. Students work alongside the Hair Salon Stylist in small groups to achieve accredited qualifications and non-accredited certificates in Hairdressing. Learners will attend for a minimum of one full day per week developing a variety of skills based on industry standards. You will be provided with a Hair Salon kit and uniform and in order to gain a Vocational Certificate, Smile and Style Salon will provide opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques used within the Hair and Beauty Industry. Personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life will also be gained. As well as training in our busy salon, you’ll also gain valuable experience and demonstrations from our very good friends, stylists to the stars, Nick Malenko and Royston Blythe from “Royston Blythe” based in Wolverhampton (Bridgnorth Road) and the other in Shrewsbury (Saint Mary’s Street).
The unit award and qualification is portfolio based and practical in activity and has a selection of mandatory units such as Health & Safety, Customer Service and Equality & Diversity and contains several vocational units focused on the industry standards from Entry Level – Level 1:
- Introduction to working in Hair & Beauty Salon
- Presenting a professional image in a salon
- Hair colour services
- Plaiting and Twisting Hair
Salon reception duties - Colour hair using temporary colour
- Styling Women’s and Men’s Hair
- Assist with Nail Services
- Assist with Facial Skin Care Treatments
A Typical Day at Smile and Style
Arrival 09:15-09.30 Cup of tea and discuss plans and bookings for the day ahead
Session 1 09:30-10:30 Plaiting PowerPoint presentation and practical session
Break 10:30-10.45 Quick snack and drink
Session 2 10.45-12:30 Research types of plait designs, watch demonstration and identify appropriate equipment
Lunch 12:30-13:15 Lunch break
Session 3 13:15-15:30 Hair plaiting practical exercise and hygiene worksheet for portfolio
*There will be some unsociable hours for those entering the world of work and for events this is to ensure that full exposure to the industry is experienced.
What Next?
The experience and qualifications (where appropriate) can lead to gaining new skills, interests and knowledge to live an active life, live independently and/or progress to further study, supported internship, traineeship, apprenticeship or employment.
The course aims to give learners the knowledge, skills and confidence to take pride in their appearance and to gain relevant employment (where appropriate). Learners will gain an understanding of how to communicate with customers, identify the customer needs and deliver exceptional services. Learners will be encouraged to transfer skills learnt to other areas of their life and to inspire others by passing on their knowledge. The course is based on the proposition that being able to feel and look good is an essential life skill which empowers people to make changes that have benefits to health, wellbeing and occupation.
